{"id":2246,"date":"2017-08-09T07:57:40","date_gmt":"2017-08-09T11:57:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/matroidunion.org\/?p=2246"},"modified":"2017-12-05T06:51:11","modified_gmt":"2017-12-05T11:51:11","slug":"sigma-2017-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/matroidunion.org\/?p=2246","title":{"rendered":"SiGMa 2017 Recap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Workshop on Structure in Graphs and Matroids (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.math.uwaterloo.ca\/~jfgeelen\/SiGMa2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SiGMa 2017<\/a>) just wrapped up a few weeks ago in Waterloo. \u00a0This was a continuation of similar workshops organized by Bert Gerards in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.matroidunion.org\/meetings\/2008\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2008<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.matroidunion.org\/meetings\/2010\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2010<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.matroidunion.org\/meetings\/2012\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2012<\/a>\u00a0and by Stefan van Zwam and Rudi Pendavingh in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/matroidunion.org\/?page_id=469\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2014<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/matroidunion.org\/?page_id=1578\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I would like to thank Jim Geelen, Peter Nelson, Luke Postle, and Stefan van Zwam (the organizers of this year&#8217;s workshop) who did an excellent job in choosing the program and making sure everything ran smoothly. \u00a0They even helped fellow Matroid Union blogger Nathan Bowler\u00a0overcome Canadian Visa issues in time to give his (very nice) plenary talk (thanks also go to Alan).<\/p>\n<p>This year the workshop was held in commemoration of William T. Tutte, who would have turned 100 this year. \u00a0See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwaterloo.ca\/combinatorics-and-optimization\/about\/professor-william-t-tutte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>\u00a0for a short biography of Professor Tutte. \u00a0Some matroid theorists may not be aware of Tutte&#8217;s extremely important contributions as a code breaker at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bletchleypark.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bletchley Park<\/a>\u00a0during the Second World War. \u00a0The C&amp;O Department at Waterloo has also been hosting a Distinguished Lecture Series in honour of Tutte this summer. \u00a0Click on this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwaterloo.ca\/combinatorics-and-optimization\/events\/co-tuttes-100th-distinguished-lecture-series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>\u00a0for the list of speakers and to watch the videos on YouTube.
